How Do We Get Caught Up In Addiction?

Seek completeness through external means that can result in internal destruction. Try to satisfy our spiritual needs without seeking spiritual growth and development. Family matters, stress, finances, relationships, and burnout can be other ways that lead you down the path of addiction.

Many people that want another chance are being helped with our “All hands on deck” approach. They are putting their hearts and souls into coming to Circle of Light Support groups and are standing and aggressively fighting their demons with nerve, backbone and guts. Some have gone to greater lengths to reach their Higher Power and you will definitely need power; and not man-made power, to attain these goals. Circle of Light higher power is the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. However, we won’t force you to choose ours and we won’t preach to you either. The harvest is plentiful, but the labors are few. (Luke 10:2) You are the harvest and we are the laborers and we want to help because we are our brothers and sisters keeper.

Support groups are an important part of recovery from substance use disorders and comprising members who share the same problem and voluntarily support one another in recovery from that problem. We are a recovery-oriented systems-of-care approach to substance abuse recovery. By providing social, emotional, spiritual, and informational support for persons throughout the recovery process, the group helps individuals take responsibility for their alcohol and other drug issues and for their sustained health and wellness. This helps alleviate relapsing, but builds hope.

We are not a twelve-steps, AA, or NA program and we do not follow anyone’s model but our own, but we work in collaboration with treatment agencies and referral services like twelve-steps, AA, or NA. Circle of Light utilizes an approach that is similar to the cognitive-behavioral and self-management. Our behavioral skills help clients cope with problems such as anger and frustration, depression and grief, tension and anxiety, and lack of social support. We work very hard to change the addictive beliefs that help to continue the addiction and furnish the groundwork for relapse. We must allow our minds to be changed.

According to the IOM (1990a), at least 14 million persons consume illicit drugs monthly. It is estimated that approximately 2.3% of the U.S. population over 12 years old has an illicit drug problem sufficiently serious to warrant treatment. Spirituality is an essential component in substance abuse recovery. We encourage emotional and spiritual growth with recovery and our goals and daily meditation is encouraged. In a study of recovering and relapsing adults, those in recovery for 2 years had greater levels of faith and spirituality than those continuing to relapse.

Everyone is affected by substance abuse either directly or indirectly and there is some controversy surrounding prevention. Nevertheless, prevention truly is not an option anymore but a mandate.
