PetKeepers was founded to provide quality in-home pet care for pets whose owners travel or can't get home frequently enough to provide the best level of care for their pets. The idea for this service occurred to Travis Mitchell, the founder, while he was working at Washington University Medical Center. Since he was a certified animal technician and had worked at the St. Louis Zoo, co-workers would ask him to take care of their pets when they couldn't get home or were going to be away.
Travis, who loves animals, believes that pets are much happier in their home rather than being boarded at a kennel or left out in their yards all day. So Travis began taking care of friends' pets. Pretty soon he had keys to several people's homes, and what started out as doing favors for friends turned into a part time job. Eventually Travis realized he was providing an important service to people and their pets and it was more rewarding than his work at the Medical Center.
So in 1992, Travis decided to pursue his "hobby" full time. In addition to caring for pets, Travis would also "house sit". He waters plants, brings in the mail, makes sure everything is secure, even fills clients' hot tubs if they were low. As a certified animal technician, certified animal technologist, and animal care specialist, he can administer pets medication, give them some individual attention and take them to their veterinarians if necessary.
